Las Vegas Hit & Run Accident Lawyer

Hit-and-run accidents are dangerous, deadly, and on the rise. According to a study conducted by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety in 2018, hit-and-run accidents and fatalities have been increasing every year since 2009 by an average of 7.2% per year. In reporting on the study, KTNV Las Vegas revealed that Nevada ranks fourth in the nation for the most hit-and-run deaths per capita. That report found 246 fatal hit-and-run accidents in Nevada from 2006 to 2016, including 32 accidents and at least one fatality in 2016, the most on record since 2006. More recent statistics indicate that this trend has shown no signs of reversing since the AAA study was released.

A Hit and Run is Dangerous and Illegal

Failing to stop after causing a crash is one of the most heinous actions a person can take after an accident. The person they hit could be seriously injured and in need of immediate medical attention. The responsible driver has a duty to stop and render aid or call for help. By leaving the scene, a hit-and-run driver puts the accident victim at serious risk of dying from their injuries when prompt medical attention could have saved their life.

Failing to stop or leaving the scene is not only dangerous and immoral; it’s illegal as well. Nevada law requires the driver of any vehicle involved in a crash resulting in bodily injury or death to immediately stop their vehicle at the scene or as close as possible, or to return to the scene and stay there until they have fulfilled their legal duties to exchange information and render reasonable assistance, including taking the person to the hospital or calling for an ambulance if needed. Failing to do so is a category B felony punishable by two to 20 years in prison and a fine between $2,000 and $5,000. The hit-and-run driver can be charged with a separate offense for every injured person left behind in the crash.

Cameron Law Can Help You Find the Negligent Hit-and-Run Driver

Hit-and-run drivers don’t always get away clean. They might leave behind identifiable parts of their vehicle or be caught on traffic cameras or surveillance footage from nearby businesses. There may also be witnesses to the crash who can identify the car or driver. Hit-and-run drivers might also visit local repair shops to hide the damage to their vehicles. Since hit-and-run is a serious felony, law enforcement officers will often follow up on these leads, and they have a good record of success tracking down hit-and-run drivers. Our firm can also help locate the driver by hiring professional investigators to supplement any work the police might be doing. Once we find the driver, we’ll work tirelessly to bring them to justice and make them pay for all the damage they have caused, including seeking punitive or exemplary damages to hold them accountable for their willful misconduct in appropriate cases.

Cameron Law Can Handle Your Uninsured Motorist Claim

If the hit-and-run driver can’t be found, we can help you pursue compensation through your automobile insurance. When you purchase liability insurance as required by law, the insurance company will also offer uninsured motorist (UM) coverage. UM coverage is meant to cover you when you get hit by an uninsured driver, but it can also be used to pay the damages caused by a hit-and-run driver who cannot be located or identified. Unless the insurance company can prove they offered you UM coverage and you declined it in writing, we can pursue a UM claim on your behalf. Our skilled and experienced car accident lawyer will ensure the insurance company treats you fairly and settles your claim for an appropriate amount.
